Troubleshooting
If you are experiencing difficulty playing the movies, and you don’t find the answer to your question on this page, visit Apple’s QuickTime Support Page for more troubleshooting information.
Q: Why can’t I play a movie?
QuickTime 7 is required to play the movies. You can obtain it as a free download for either Windows or Mac OS X.
Q: Why does the sound play but there is no picture?
If you play a movie with QuickTime, you might hear the sound, but with no picture, except for a white or gray screen. You may also see an alert stating that there is missing software. This is likely due to one of two reasons: (1) you’re not running QuickTime 7, the latest version of QuickTime, which is required for seeing the movies, or (2) for Windows users, your display might not be configured to display 24-bit (High Quality) color. You can verify this by going to “Start” menu, choosing “Control Panels” (choose “Classic View” if you’re not already in it) and then double-clicking on the “Display” icon. Then click on the “Settings” tab, and then make sure that the “High (24 bit)” color mode is selected.
Q: Why does the movie stutter and stop?
Depending on the speed of your network connection, QuickTime will start to play your movie before it has completed the download of the whole movie. If the download is slower than the playback speed, you may experience the movie stuttering or stopping. The progress bar within the player controller will show you visually what percentage of the movie has downloaded from the server. You can tune your installation of QuickTime depending on the speed of your network connection. See Getting the best playback with Internet movies for more information. Downloading movies with a dial-up connection is not recommended.
Q: Why am I unable to install QuickTime 7 on my Windows PC?
Visit QuickTime: Windows Troubleshooting Tips for more information.
Q: Why did you choose to compress the movies using the new H.264 and AAC codecs rather than something my machine supports without having to install QuickTime 7?
H.264 uses the latest techniques in video compression technology and provide spectacular image quality at very low data rates compared to previous compression technologies. In addition, the audio is compressed with AAC to provide exceptional sound quality at low data rates.
